~WELCOME~
This page is for artists whose portfolios have been accepted to SFA
SFA is actively promoted among scientific and artistic communities by the SFA team and a small group of artists that are featured on the site. All of the artists on SFA, if they are interested in doing so, are encouraged to become involved in the direction of the project as it grows. We believe SFA has a lot more potential for community-building among illustrators and repairing the relationship between art and science. We have some pretty lofty goals for the future and we’re always interested in hearing your ideas!
Contract with SFA
We hear many stories of artists struggling to provide work for clients at universities and other institutions due to institutional rules and restrictions. In order to remove this obstacle for both artists and their clients, SFA is establishing itself as a contractor at these organizations in order to allow artists to bill and contract through SFA instead of having to do it themselves (you’ll do less paperwork too!)

ARTIST FAQ
Why was my portfolio rejected?
Our standard for the quality of portfolios on SFA is very high. We do this not to be exclusionary, but to maintain the reputation of the site and establish it as the go-to place to find professional scientific illustrators.
However, it is very important to us that SFA is also a community that fosters growth and opportunity for emerging artists. We are hard at work developing a way to feature work by early-career artists that may not have a large enough portfolio for the site. If your portfolio is not accepted there is still a place for you here at SFA. Please do not be discouraged if your portfolio isn’t accepted - there will be many opportunities for your work to be featured by us. We highly encourage you to join our online community, the Agora, where you can interact with other emerging artists, participate in monthly challenges, give and receive critiques, and more.
How do I make changes to my portfolio?
Use this form.
Please, PLEASE do not hesitate to request as many changes as often as you like! We want to keep SFA up-to-date and we want you to be happy with your page. We don’t mind making lots of changes, no matter how small and frequent.
What changes can I request?
You can change anything about your page! You can request changes to background colors, links colors, artist bio and info, artist photo, and portfolio images.
Why can't I make the changes myself?
We deliberately avoided making SFA into a membership website (in the vein of DeviantArt, etc…) because we want:
a clean, consistent design
flexibility to make layout changes and updates
to encourage engagement by artists with us (the SFA team). This is a collaboration!
to avoid the frustration and learning curve that comes with a customizable platform
to keep the site up-to-date. We all know what it’s like to let an upload platform stagnate. SFA will reach out with reminders to artists to freshen up their portfolio every once in awhile (and then we will make sure you follow through)
I have more questions?
You can always chat with members of the SFA team on the SFA Slack. You can also use the contact form or email El directly.
